Why Reforestation Matters
Forests are more than just trees; they're vital ecosystems that house over 80% of the world's plant, animal, and insect habitats. However, since 1990, we've lost nearly 1 billion acres of forests due to activities like farming, livestock grazing, mining, and deforestation practices. This loss reduces biodiversity, affects soil and water quality, impacts wildlife habitats, and contributes to climate change.
Forest Restoration is Crucial
Restoring forests, when done appropriately, helps revive habitats and ecosystems, creating jobs and income. It's a powerful nature-based solution to climate change, estimated to deliver one-third of the global emissions reductions needed by 2030. Unfortunately, the world lost 11.1 million hectares of tree cover in the tropics just last year. Wildfires, accounting for more than 80% of U.S. reforestation needs, add to the urgency.
Why Rwanda?
Our partner, veritree, works with several different tree planting organizations across the globe, who work directly with the communities they are planting in, to ensure the right tree species are being planted in the right regions, at the right times. This year we have chosen to focus our efforts in Rwanda as this is a region that we felt could have the most impact, not only for the planet but for impoverished communities as well.
Agriculture is the backbone of Rwanda’s economy accounting for one third of the national GDP. However, the hillsides have been farmed extensively leading to soil erosion and a loss of vital top-soil. A lack of trees on the hillsides that bind the soil have led to landslides. Through veritree we are partnered with One Acre Fund, the Rwandan Government, and local farmers, to promote and verify sustainable agroforestry in Rwanda. Agroforestry has a key role to play in ending hunger and poverty in Rwanda. This program involves equipping smallholder farmers with the finance, skills, and expertise to improve productivity, soil health, and climate resilience of their crops.

While carbon sequestration is a crucial aspect of nature-based solutions, we refrain from solely focusing on it. The dynamic relationship between nature, ecosystems, and people is complex. Our priority is deep decarbonization of operations and value chains, coupled with responsible nature investment.

While the Earth boasts approximately 3 trillion trees, the alarming rate of losing 15 billion each year underscores the importance of both preserving existing forests and actively engaging in restoration efforts. Our commitment extends beyond preservation to ensure the sustainable growth and survival of our global tree population.

The ability of trees to sequester carbon varies by species. Each tree type makes a unique contribution to offsetting carbon emissions. This underscores the diverse and impactful role that different trees play in mitigating the effects of climate change.
