Our Impact

Why Rwanda?

Our partner, veritree, works with several different tree planting organizations across the globe, who work directly with the communities they are planting in, to ensure the right tree species are being planted in the right regions, at the right times. This year we have chosen to focus our efforts in Rwanda as this is a region that we felt could have the most impact, not only for the planet but for impoverished communities as well.

Agriculture is the backbone of Rwanda’s economy accounting for one third of the national GDP. However, the hillsides have been farmed extensively leading to soil erosion and a loss of vital top-soil. A lack of trees on the hillsides that bind the soil have led to landslides. Through veritree we are partnered with One Acre Fund, the Rwandan Government, and local farmers, to promote and verify sustainable agroforestry in Rwanda. Agroforestry has a key role to play in ending hunger and poverty in Rwanda. This program involves equipping smallholder farmers with the finance, skills, and expertise to improve productivity, soil health, and climate resilience of their crops.

In Rwanda, we're committed to planting a variety of trees, including Avocado, Alder, Spanish Cedar, and other shade trees. This diverse approach enhances biodiversity, restores ecosystems, and provides sustainable resources for local communities.

The Significance of Tree Planting

At Roots to Table, we recognize nature as a crucial ally in our collective fight against climate change. Trees, functioning as carbon sinks, play a pivotal role by absorbing and storing carbon dioxide. This not only benefits the planet but also contributes to the well-being of ecosystems and local communities.

Preserving and Restoring Existing Forests

While the Earth boasts approximately 3 trillion trees, the alarming rate of losing 15 billion each year underscores the importance of both preserving existing forests and actively engaging in restoration efforts. Our commitment extends beyond preservation to ensure the sustainable growth and survival of our global tree population.

Carbon Sequestration Dynamics

The ability of trees to sequester carbon varies by species. Each tree type makes a unique contribution to offsetting carbon emissions. This underscores the diverse and impactful role that different trees play in mitigating the effects of climate change.

Proactive Risk Management

In our pursuit of sustainable reforestation, we understand the importance of managing risks effectively. Veritree employs a proactive strategy by diversifying project portfolios. This not only safeguards against natural catastrophes, such as wildfires and flooding events but also enhances the resilience of our reforestation initiatives. Our commitment is not just to plant trees but to ensure their long-term survival and positive impact on the planet.
